Books and Records

According to a 1999 report to the House Ways and Means Committee by the government's General Accounting Office, a "books and records" audit is a meeting "in which auditors in IRS district offices hold face-to-face meetings with individual taxpayers to review their books and records." This contrasts, for example, with audits in which the IRS simply asks a taxpayer to supply more information about his return by mail.
